Named after the Greek author Dimitrios Vikelas, Syros Island National Airport serves the administrative capital of the Cyclades, located roughly 144 kilometres southeast of Athens in the Aegean Sea. It opened in 1991 and is operated by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority. The airport is compact, with an asphalt runway of about 1,080 metres that limits operations to smaller regional aircraft, and it handled around 18,000 passengers in 2018.
