Kasteli International Airport is a new airport under construction near Kasteli, about 39 km southeast of Heraklion on Crete. Its foundation stone was laid in February 2020, with opening expected around 2027-2028. Being developed by the Ariadne Airport Group (GEK Terna and GMR), it is intended to replace the overcrowded existing Heraklion airport, with planned initial capacity of roughly 9-11 million passengers a year, scalable up to about 18 million.
