Ellinikon was Athens' principal international airport, located in the Elliniko suburb about 7 km south of the city centre. Opened in 1938, it grew into Greece's busiest airport, handling roughly 13.5 million passengers in its final year. It closed on 28 March 2001 when operations transferred to the new Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) at Spata.
