Chios Island National Airport, named Omiros after the poet Homer, serves the north Aegean island of Chios from the Kampos area just south of the main town. Opened to traffic in August 1969 and operated by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority, it is one of the busier regional gateways in the eastern Aegean, handling close to 230,000 passengers in 2018. Its single asphalt runway, aligned 01/19 and measuring about 1,511 by 30 metres, can accommodate narrow-body jets up to the Airbus A320.
