Athens International Airport, known as Eleftherios Venizelos, is the largest and busiest airport in Greece and the country's principal gateway. It opened on 28 March 2001 at Spata, about 20 km east of the city centre, replacing the former Ellinikon airport shortly before the 2004 Olympic Games. The main hub for Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air, it operates two parallel runways and a single main terminal, and handled almost 34 million passengers in 2025.
