Alexandroupoli Airport, named Dimokritos after the ancient philosopher Democritus of Abdera, is the gateway to north-eastern Greece, sitting about 7 km east of Alexandroupolis in the Thrace region. Built in 1944 and opened to international traffic in 1955, it has a single runway of roughly 2,580 metres and supports both civil and military aviation. Aegean Airlines and Sky Express link it year-round to Athens and several Aegean islands, with seasonal international charters in summer.
